Why this matters
Adding AI to an app no longer needs a research team. Hosted model APIs let a small Ghanaian startup add summarising, translation, classification or question answering with a few web requests. Adverts for AI engineers and prompt engineers in Accra ask for exactly this: designing prompts, testing outputs and building them safely into products. Doing it well is a real engineering skill.
How an AI API works
Your app sends an HTTP request to the provider's server. The request contains your API key (a secret that identifies your account), the model name, and your prompt: the instructions and text you want the model to work on. The server sends back the model's answer, usually as JSON. Providers charge by the amount of text processed, usually counted in tokens, so long prompts and long answers cost more.
Most providers publish official client libraries for Python and other languages. Use those and follow the provider's own documentation, because model names and options change often.
Writing good prompts
A prompt is a set of instructions for a capable assistant that knows nothing about your situation. Good prompts:
- Give context. Say who the users are and what the output is for: "You help market traders in Tamale understand their stock records."
- Are specific about the task and format. "Summarise in three bullet points of plain English, under 60 words."
