Why this matters
You have the skills and a portfolio. Now you need a plan that fits the real job market. In Ghana, machine learning engineer roles mostly ask for degrees and years of experience, and we found no entry level ones. So the smart move is to aim at the roles that are open to you now, and grow into AI work from inside them.
Stepping stone roles in Ghana
- Data analyst and data officer roles at banks, telecoms, NGOs, government agencies and startups. You work with real data daily and can introduce simple models where they help. The Data Analyst track prepares you for these.
- Monitoring and evaluation roles at NGOs and development projects, which involve survey data, analysis and reporting across the northern regions and beyond.
- Research assistant posts at universities, research institutes and survey firms. Some projects involve health, agriculture or language data and machine learning methods. Watch university career pages and research group announcements.
- Junior software developer roles, especially where companies are adding AI features to their products.
Remote and contract work
Some remote employers welcome applicants based in Africa for data and AI work: data labelling, evaluating model outputs, junior data science contracts and research support. These can build experience and income. Protect yourself:
