Before you apply for support work, it helps to know exactly what the job looks like. Adverts use many titles for very similar work, and the interview will go better if you can describe a normal day in your own words.
Job titles you will see
Customer service representative, customer service agent, call centre agent, contact centre agent, live chat agent, customer support officer, customer experience associate and customer care officer usually mean the same family of work. Some titles point to a special focus. A lead caller or telesales agent makes outbound calls to people who showed interest. An app support agent helps people use a phone app. A collections agent follows up on unpaid bills. A customer success role looks after existing customers so they keep using a product.
What the work involves
Most support jobs share the same core tasks:
- Answering questions about products, prices, orders, accounts and policies.
- Solving problems, or logging them and passing them to the right team.
- Writing a record of every contact so the next agent knows what happened.
- Following up when you promised to call or write back.
- Spotting repeated problems and telling your team leader.
