Registering your business gives it a legal identity. It can help you open a business bank account, get a merchant mobile money account, sign up for some online payment services, apply for support programmes and sell to larger buyers who need invoices from a registered business. Even if you do not register straight away, understanding the options means you can make the choice with confidence.
Who registers businesses in Ghana
The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) registers businesses in Ghana. Its website, orc.gov.gh, explains the types of registration and links to its online services.
Common types for small businesses
- Business name (sole proprietorship). The ORC describes this as a one person business. It is the most common starting point for a single trader. You own the business personally, and the business is not separate from you in law, which means its debts are your debts.
- Partnership. Two or more people running a business together.
- Company. A separate legal body from its owners, such as a company limited by shares. It involves more paperwork and duties, and suits bigger or growing businesses, especially those with several owners or investors.
Most people starting a small online shop begin with a business name. Check with the ORC whether and when you must register in your situation.
