You have found a lead, qualified them and got their attention. Now comes the conversation that decides whether they buy. Many people imagine a great salesperson as someone who talks smoothly and never stops. In practice, the best sellers talk less and listen more. They find out what the customer really needs, show how their product fits, deal honestly with doubts, and ask clearly for a decision.
The shape of a sales conversation
Whether it is a phone call, a WhatsApp chat or a meeting in an office in Wa, most sales conversations move through four parts:
- Discovery. Asking questions to understand the customer's situation, problems and goals. You listen far more than you talk.
- Presenting. Showing how your product solves the problems you heard, often with a quote or short proposal.
- Handling objections. Responding to concerns such as price, timing or trust, honestly and calmly.
- Closing. Agreeing the decision and the details: what, how many, price, delivery and payment.
Sometimes all four happen in ten minutes. In B2B sales they may stretch across several meetings over weeks.
Why listening wins
When people feel understood, they trust you. When they trust you, they believe your recommendation. A seller who jumps straight into a product speech often recommends the wrong option, misses the real concern, and sounds like every other seller.
