Online classes, team meetings, some mentoring sessions and some job interviews now happen on video calls. Joining on time, with your microphone and camera under control, shows that you are ready for online work. It is a skill you can learn in one afternoon.
Joining from a link
Most video calls start with a link that someone sends you on WhatsApp or by email. Common tools include Google Meet, Zoom and WhatsApp video calls.
- On a phone, tapping a Google Meet or Zoom link usually asks you to install the app. Install it from the Play Store or App Store, and do it on WiFi before the day of the call.
- On a computer, many calls open straight in the web browser, with nothing to install.
- You may need to sign in with your email account. Use the same account you used to register for the course or interview.
- Join a few minutes early so you have time to fix any problems.
The buttons that matter
Every video call app has the same few controls, usually at the bottom of the screen:
- Microphone. Tap or click to mute or unmute. When it has a line through it, nobody can hear you.
- Camera. Tap or click to turn your video on or off.
- Chat. A place to type questions or share a link.
- Raise hand. A polite way to ask to speak in a large group.
- Leave. Often a red button. It ends the call for you only.
