Why this matters
A manager at a microfinance office in Tamale does not want to scroll through 3,000 loan records. She wants to know: how much was repaid this month, which branch is behind, and is it getting better or worse? Your job is to turn the raw rows into that answer, quickly and in a form she can read at a glance. Job adverts for MIS, M&E and reporting roles keep asking for exactly this: summaries, charts, dashboards and KPI tracking.
This section teaches the three tools that do most of that work in Excel and Google Sheets.
What this section covers
- PivotTables: summarise thousands of rows by any category in seconds, such as total sales by branch and month, without writing a single formula.
- Charts that make a point: choose the right chart for the question, then title and label it so nobody misreads it.
- Conditional formatting: colour rules that flag what needs attention, such as overdue payments or low stock, automatically.
From rows to answers
Think of reporting as three steps:
- Summarise. Reduce many rows to a few numbers that answer the question. A PivotTable or a set of SUMIFS formulas does this.
- Show. Turn the summary into a picture when a picture is clearer than numbers, for example a trend over twelve months.
