Every freelancer's reputation is built one job at a time. Each finished project, each honest review and each recommendation adds to it, and one broken promise or dishonest act can damage it badly, especially in a close community where people talk. Once you have a few happy clients, the focus shifts from finding any work to keeping good clients and growing steadily.
Why reputation matters so much
New clients cannot test your work before hiring you. They rely on signals: your portfolio, your reviews, what other people say about you, and how you behave in the first conversation. A good reputation means clients come to you, accept your prices more easily and forgive the occasional problem. A poor one means every job is a struggle.
In towns such as Tamale, Bolgatanga and Wa, word of mouth travels fast. A head teacher who is happy with your newsletter will mention you to other schools. A trader who feels cheated will tell everyone at the market. Online, reviews stay visible on your profile for a long time.
What this section covers
- Reviews, reputation and repeat clients. How to ask for honest reviews and recommendations, why you must never buy or fake them, how to handle mistakes, and why looking after client data matters, including under Ghana's data protection law.
- Growing your freelance income. How freelancers with steady clients grow over time: deeper skills, clearer packages, focusing on a type of client, raising prices for new work, working with other freelancers, and saving for slow months. This lesson is optional and makes the most sense once you have regular work.
