A hiring manager in Accra or a remote team lead might spend only a few minutes on your application. In that time, they want to install your app, glance at your code and understand what you can do. A focused portfolio makes that easy. Three well finished apps beat ten half built tutorials.
Choosing portfolio apps
Pick apps that solve real problems and show the skills adverts ask for. Good Ghanaian examples:
- A trader's sales book with offline storage and syncing. Shows local storage, offline first design and APIs.
- An appointment or reminder app for a clinic, salon or school, with notifications. Shows backends, sign in and push.
- A shop catalogue with a mock mobile money checkout in sandbox mode. Shows state management, forms, error handling and safe payment design.
Do not copy a tutorial app and change the colours. Employers recognise them. Build something for a real person if you can, even for free, and ask for honest feedback.
Make each project easy to judge
Every portfolio repo needs a strong README:
- one sentence on what the app does and who it is for
- three or four screenshots or a short screen recording
- a Play Store link or a downloadable test build, if possible
- the main technologies: Flutter, state approach, storage, backend
