A build that works for you is not finished. It is finished when real people can use it, it survives odd inputs, and the client can keep it running without you. Adverts for data collection roles mention pilot testing; operations roles mention written procedures; app roles mention end user support. This lesson covers all three.
Test in three rounds
1. Your own checks. Go through every path: each form branch, each app screen, each automation route. Try normal answers, empty answers, very long answers, wrong formats (a nine digit phone number, letters in a number field) and duplicates. Check that data lands where it should.
2. Real users. Watch two or three people from the actual audience use it, on their own devices. Give them a task, such as "register a new member", and stay quiet. Note where they hesitate, tap the wrong thing or ask a question. Five minutes of watching teaches more than an hour of guessing.
3. A short pilot. Run it for real with a small group for a few days, such as one class or one market day, before switching everyone over. Keep the old way available until you trust the new one.
Fix what you find, and test the fix.
Write a short guide
Most clients will not read a long manual. Aim for one or two pages, with screenshots, written for the person who will use it:
- What it does, in one paragraph.
- How to do the common tasks, step by step: add a record, find a record, read the dashboard.
