Many software teams in Ghana, from bank digital teams to startups, use some form of Agile. Adverts for business analysts, product operations staff and associate product managers often mention Scrum, Kanban and tools such as Jira. You do not need a certificate to start; you need to understand the ideas and why they work.
The core idea
Instead of planning everything for a year and delivering it all at once, Agile teams build in small pieces, show working results often, and adjust based on what they learn. If a decision was wrong, you find out in two weeks, not twelve months.
Key terms
- Backlog. A prioritised list of work waiting to be done: user stories, bugs and tasks. The product person usually keeps it in order.
- Sprint. A fixed period, often one or two weeks, in which the team commits to finishing a set of backlog items. This rhythm comes from Scrum.
- Sprint planning. A meeting at the start of a sprint where the team picks items from the top of the backlog and agrees what they can finish.
- Standup. A short daily check in of about 15 minutes. Many teams cover what each person did, what they will do next and what is blocking them.
- Review or demo. At the end of the sprint the team shows what it built to stakeholders.
- Retrospective. The team discusses what went well, what did not, and one or two things to improve.
