Why this matters
For many people in Ghana, an Android phone is their main way to use the internet, and many of those phones are budget models with limited storage and older software. Testing adverts in Ghana and on remote boards name Android and mobile testing often. If you own an Android phone, you already have a test lab.
How mobile users really meet an app
Testing on a new, fast phone over office Wi-Fi hides most real problems. Think about the conditions your users live with:
- Storage almost full: the app may fail to install, update or save photos.
- Older Android versions: features that work on new phones may crash on old ones.
- Small screens: buttons hidden under the keyboard, text cut off, dialogs that cannot be closed.
- Patchy data: moving between 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi and no signal, or data running out mid payment.
- Interruptions: an incoming call, an SMS, a low battery warning, switching to WhatsApp and back.
- Battery saver and data saver modes: these can stop background tasks such as notifications.
- Shared phones: another family member signs in, or the phone is restarted halfway through.
