Remote clients hire assistants they can depend on. They want work delivered on time and their information kept safe. In Ghana, power cuts and patchy data are real challenges, and online accounts are a target for scammers. Clients who have worked with assistants in other countries know these risks exist. What they care about is whether you have a plan.
What remote adverts ask for
Many remote assistant adverts ask for a reliable laptop and a stable internet connection, and some state a minimum internet speed. Some also expect you to keep their information confidential and follow security rules. These requirements are not there to exclude you. They exist because a VA who disappears for a day without warning, or whose account gets hacked, can cause the client real harm.
Be honest with yourself about your setup. If you only have a phone and prepaid data, you can still learn every skill in this roadmap and do many kinds of work, especially for local clients and for tasks like inbox, scheduling and customer messages. For roles that demand a laptop and fast internet all day, you may need to save towards equipment first, or work some hours from a place with a computer and steady power, such as a school lab, library or community centre.
Two kinds of reliability
- Being available when you said you would be. This means planning for power and data problems before they happen.
- Keeping accounts and information safe. This means strong passwords, two step verification, careful sharing and spotting phishing.
