A strong backend portfolio is not twenty half finished projects. It is two or three deployed, tested, well explained systems that show the skills employers ask for. When a hiring manager at an Accra fintech or a remote startup opens your GitHub, they should understand in two minutes what you built, why, and how well.
Project ideas that fit Ghana
Pick projects that solve problems you understand. They are more interesting to build and to talk about:
- Orders and mobile money for a small shop. Products, orders, a simulated payment flow with signed webhooks and idempotency, and SMS notifications through a background queue. This one project shows almost every skill in this roadmap.
- School fees or church dues tracker. Members, payments, balances, reminders and a treasurer role with permissions. Add a simple USSD style menu endpoint.
- Farmers' cooperative records. Members, deliveries in kilograms, payouts in pesewas, and reports by community. Handle offline field officers who sync later, which raises interesting questions about duplicates.
- Bus or event ticket booking. Seats that must not be sold twice, which teaches transactions and locking.
Use test keys and made up data only. Never put real customer data in a portfolio.
