Followers are not the goal by themselves. What matters is having people who trust you, come back, and act: buy, share, donate or hire you. Some Ghanaian adverts for social media content roles ask for audience engagement, and clients who hire you to grow their pages expect you to understand how this works.
Choose a clear focus
People follow a channel because they know what they will get. "Everything about my life" is hard to follow. "Easy northern recipes on a budget", "phone repair tips in Hausa" or "daily life on a farm near Yendi" is clear. A clear focus is often called a niche. It can be broad enough to give you many ideas, but narrow enough that the right people say "this is for me".
Serve before you sell
Most of your content should help, teach, move or entertain your audience. If every post is an advert, people tune out. A simple balance is to make most posts useful and only some promotional.
Talk with people
- Reply to comments, especially early on. Answer questions and thank people.
- Ask questions in captions: "Which town should I visit next?"
- Make videos that answer common questions from comments.
- Use WhatsApp groups or channels where it fits, for people who want updates.
A community grows when people feel seen. A few hundred engaged people can be worth more to a business than many thousands who never respond.
