Why this matters
Knowing where data scientists work, and what those employers actually ask for, stops you from studying in a vacuum. It also helps you see a realistic route in, rather than waiting for a perfect job title to appear.
Who hires
Data science roles in Ghana appear at:
- mobile money providers and banks, studying transaction patterns, credit risk and customer behaviour
- savings and loans companies and microfinance, deciding who to lend to and how to remind people to repay
- consulting and audit firms, building analyses for clients in many sectors
- agritech companies, estimating yields, scoring farmers for input credit and planning extension visits
- energy, climate and carbon projects, working with sensor, satellite and map data
- NGOs, research projects and development partners, running surveys, evaluations and experiments in health, education and agriculture
- remote employers abroad that accept applicants based in Africa
Most of these roles are based in Accra, with some remote. Northern Ghana has many research, health and agriculture projects that need people who can analyse survey and field data, often starting under titles such as research assistant or M&E officer.
