Freelance marketplaces and remote job boards let clients anywhere in the world post projects and hire freelancers they have never met. They can open doors to clients abroad, but they come with rules, fees and strong competition. Go in with clear eyes so you do not spend weeks of data and effort on the wrong platform.
Two kinds of platform
- Freelance marketplaces. Clients post projects or browse freelancer profiles. You send proposals, agree terms on the platform, deliver and get paid through it. The platform usually holds the client's payment for a project and releases it when the work is approved, and charges fees.
- Remote job boards. Companies post part time, contract or full time remote roles. You apply more like a normal job. Some roles are open worldwide; others are limited to certain countries.
Read the rules before you build a profile
Each platform is different, and rules change. Before you sign up, find and read:
- Who can join. Some platforms do not accept new freelancers from every country, or limit sign ups when they have too many in a category. Some remote roles say "open to applicants in certain countries only". Respect these limits. Never pretend to live somewhere else or use a tool to hide your location; accounts are closed for this and you may lose money held in them.
- Fees. How much the platform takes from each payment, and whether you pay to send proposals. Some platforms sell credits for applying.
