Flyers and posters are the bread and butter of design work in Ghana. Churches announce crusades and harvests, families announce funerals and weddings, schools announce speech days, politicians and associations announce meetings, and shops announce sales. Print shop and in house adverts regularly name flyers, posters, banners and brochures among the main tasks.
Know where it will be seen
- WhatsApp flyer: seen on a phone, often for a second or two. Portrait shape, large text, small file.
- Handbill or A5 flyer: held in the hand, read up close. Can carry a little more detail.
- Poster: pasted on a wall or noticeboard and seen while walking past. The main message must be readable from a few steps away.
- Banner: hung on a building or across a road and read from far away, often from a moving vehicle. Only a few words, very large, with strong contrast.
The further away people are, the fewer words you can use and the bigger they must be. A banner that copies every line from the flyer will be unreadable.
A structure that works
Most event flyers follow a reliable order:
- The hook: the event name or the offer, biggest and boldest.
- The key facts: date, time and venue, grouped together.
