Once a process is mapped, you choose how to build it. No single tool is best. Remote operations adverts name Zapier, Make and Power Automate, and some ask candidates to monitor workflows and troubleshoot failures. This lesson compares the main types and shows how to keep automations healthy.
The main types
Connector tools. These connect many apps through a visual editor.
- Zapier: a workflow is a Zap, with one trigger and one or more actions, built as a list of steps.
- Make: a workflow is a scenario, built as a diagram of connected modules, which makes branches and loops easy to see.
- Power Automate: a workflow is a flow; it fits organisations already using Microsoft 365.
- n8n: its code is publicly available, so teams with technical help can host it themselves, or use it as a hosted service.
Built in automation. Google Forms, spreadsheets, messaging apps, website builders and app builders often have their own rules, notifications and scheduled actions. These are usually simplest to keep running, with nothing extra to connect.
Light scripting. Google Apps Script can run small programs when a form is submitted or at set times, inside Google tools. It needs some code, which makes it optional here, but it is useful to know it exists.
