Why this matters
You will see the ISTQB Foundation certificate mentioned in some testing adverts, usually as a plus rather than a requirement. You will also need to know where to look for a first role when local openings are few. This lesson covers both honestly.
The ISTQB Foundation certificate
ISTQB, the International Software Testing Qualifications Board, runs a widely known set of testing certificates. The entry level one is the Certified Tester Foundation Level, often shortened to CTFL. A few points to know:
- The syllabus is free to download from the ISTQB website, and it makes a good study outline even if you never sit the exam.
- The exam costs money and is taken through approved exam providers, sometimes online. Check current prices and options on official sites only.
- It is not required for most junior roles we saw. A strong portfolio usually says more about you.
The chapters of the current syllabus (version 4.0.1) line up with lessons in this track:
- Fundamentals of Testing: the testing basics and principles lessons.
- Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle: test levels and working in Agile teams.
- Static Testing: reviewing stories and acceptance criteria before code exists.
