Why this matters
Ghanaian and remote security adverts often name certifications. Senior roles ask for certifications such as CISSP, CISM or CISA, which require years of experience. Junior and mid level adverts mention options such as CompTIA Security+ as an advantage, and remote Level 1 SOC adverts sometimes list Security+ or similar as desirable. A beginner certificate will not replace skills, but it can help a CV get noticed. This topic is optional: you can become job ready without one.
Common entry options
These are listed as examples, not recommendations. Check each provider's official page for current content, cost and any financial aid before deciding.
- ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC): an entry level certification that ISC2 says requires no work experience. Its outline covers security principles, security governance, identity and access management concepts, networking and cloud security concepts, and security operations and incident response.
- CompTIA Security+: a widely recognised, vendor neutral certification aimed at roles such as security analyst. CompTIA updates it periodically, and its site announced a new version for late 2026, so check which version you would study for.
- Google Cybersecurity Certificate: a beginner programme on Coursera covering security foundations, networks, Linux and SQL, SIEM tools, detection and response, and Python. Coursera charges a subscription, though financial aid may be available.
- Microsoft Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals (SC 900): a fundamentals exam focused on Microsoft's security and identity services, useful where employers use Microsoft systems.
