Why this matters
Skills only turn into income when someone can see them. Employers hiring junior data staff in Ghana, whether an NGO in Tamale, a bank in Accra or a remote company, want evidence that you can take real data and find a useful answer. Certificates help a little; a clear piece of work you can show and explain helps much more. This section helps you build that evidence and find the right first door.
Many doors into data work
The title "data analyst" is only one way in. Look at adverts and you will see data skills asked for in:
- Data entry and data clerk roles, where accuracy and spreadsheets matter most.
- Enumerator and field data collector roles on surveys, often short contracts with NGOs and research organisations.
- M&E assistant and M&E officer roles at NGOs and development projects.
- Research assistant roles at research organisations and universities.
- Reporting, MIS and business intelligence roles at banks, telcos, microfinance companies and distributors.
- Remote junior analyst roles, which usually expect SQL and a BI tool.
Many senior M&E and analyst adverts ask for several years of experience. That is normal. The way in is often through an assistant role, national service posting, internship, volunteer placement or short field contract, which then becomes the experience the next advert asks for.
