When someone in Tamale needs a phone repairer, a guest house or a printing shop, many of them open Google or Google Maps and type what they want. Those people are not scrolling for fun. They want something now. Businesses that show up with correct details, good photos and genuine reviews often get the call. Search skills appear in several Ghanaian digital marketing adverts, and they are a full specialisation in SydCrest's Delta Mentoring Program.
How search differs from social media
On social media, you put content in front of people who were not looking for it. On search, people come looking, and your job is to be found and to look trustworthy when they arrive. That changes how you think:
- You start from the words people type, not from what you want to say.
- Accuracy matters a lot. A wrong phone number or closed hours lose the customer instantly.
- Results build slowly. Search work often takes weeks or months to show, but it keeps working once it does.
Two kinds of search visibility
- Local search. Results on Google Maps and the map box that appears for searches like "pharmacy near me" or "hotel in Bolgatanga". These mostly come from Google Business Profile listings.
- Organic search. The ordinary list of web pages that Google ranks for a search. Getting there is the work of search engine optimisation, or SEO.
There are also paid search ads, which appear above or among results. You will meet those in the paid advertising section.
