Raw clips become a promo in the edit. Editing is where you cut out everything slow, put the best moments in order, and add the text and captions that make the video work for people scrolling with the sound off. This lesson finishes the week 8 assignment.
Free editing tools
Free editors exist for every device. Examples include CapCut and InShot on phones, Canva's video editor in a browser or app, and the editors built into some phones and computers. Each has the same basic tools: trim, split, arrange clips, add text, add music and export. Pick one and learn it well. Check each tool's terms, because some free plans add a watermark or limit features.
Editing steps
- Import your best takes in script order.
- Trim hard. Cut the start and end of every clip so each shows only the important moment. Most shots in a 30 second promo last two to five seconds.
- Check the hook. Watch the first three seconds alone. Would you stop scrolling? If not, move your strongest shot to the start.
- Add text for the key message and the call to action. Keep words short and in large, readable type, inside the safe centre area.
- Add captions for every spoken word.
- Add music or sound at a low level under the voice. Use music the platform or editor provides for that use.
- in vertical format at a good quality that is not too large for data.
