Freelancing is one of the most realistic ways to start earning from design, especially outside Accra. Shops, churches, mosques, schools, associations, event planners and NGOs in every town need flyers, logos and social media graphics, and many of them prefer to work with someone local they can meet.
Start close to home
- People you already know. Your church or mosque, school, family businesses, a friend's event. Do one or two jobs at a fair price and ask for permission to show them.
- Print shops. Many print shops have more design requests than they can handle. Offering to design for their customers can bring steady work, either at their shop or remotely.
- Event planners, photographers and decorators. They often need flyers, programmes and social graphics for their clients.
- Associations and NGOs. Farmer groups, youth groups and local NGOs need reports, posters and certificates.
Show samples on your phone when you visit. A good printed business card and a WhatsApp Business profile with a catalogue of your work make it easy for people to remember and contact you.
Grow through referrals
Most local freelance work comes from people recommending you. Deliver on time, communicate clearly, keep your prices and terms consistent and ask happy clients to tell others. A short, honest message from a real client, shared with their permission, is better than any advert.
