Why this matters
Many Ghanaian adverts ask for experience, which feels unfair when you are looking for your first job. But experience does not have to come from a paid IT job. Employers want proof that you have solved real problems for real people, behaved professionally and kept good records. You can start building that proof now.
Where to get experience
- School and community labs. Offer to help maintain the computer lab at your old school, a library or a community centre: cleaning machines, installing updates, keeping an inventory.
- Churches, mosques, clinics and NGOs. Small organisations often have no IT person. Offer to set up their Wi-Fi securely, back up their records or train staff.
- Family and local businesses. Help a shop set up a receipt printer, a pharmacy protect its computer from surges, a trader back up their phone.
- National service and internships. Universities, banks, telcos and public bodies take national service personnel and interns in IT units. Apply early and follow the official process.
- Paid small jobs. Some people start by doing phone and computer support for individuals and small businesses. Be honest about what you can and cannot do.
Always get permission, never access anyone's private files without reason, and leave things better documented than you found them.
