Why this matters
Ghanaian IT support adverts most often ask for a degree in IT, computer science or a related field, but some accept an HND, a diploma or a certificate, especially for assistant and technician roles. Several list certifications such as CompTIA A+ and Network+, CCNA, ITIL or Microsoft certifications as preferred. Knowing what each option is, and what it proves, helps you spend scarce money and time wisely.
Local routes
- Universities offer degrees in computer science, information technology and related subjects. A degree is the most common requirement for officer roles in banks and larger organisations.
- Technical universities offer HND and degree programmes in computing and ICT. An HND is accepted by some employers, including some rural and community banks.
- Private training institutes in Ghana offer diplomas and certificates in subjects such as hardware and networking, network engineering and preparation for international certifications. Check whether a course is accredited and what employers in your area think of it.
- TVET routes. Ghana's technical and vocational system uses competency based training with national certificates, and some private centres have had computer hardware and networking courses accredited for NVTI certification. Ask the centre exactly which body certifies the course.
- Free and low cost programmes. Some organisations run sponsored cohorts linked to cloud and IT support careers, such as AWS re/Start, which Amazon runs with partner organisations in selected countries. Entry rules, locations and whether a cohort is open near you vary, so check the official page for each one.
