Why this matters
Windows support is the skill Ghanaian IT support adverts mention most: installing and configuring Windows, troubleshooting software, managing updates, supporting Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365, and helping users remotely. If you know your way around Windows calmly and quickly, you can handle a large share of first line calls.
The tools you will use every day
- Settings. Open with the Start menu or the Windows key and I. System, Bluetooth and devices, Network and internet, Accounts, Apps and Windows Update all live here.
- Task Manager. Open with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Shows which apps and processes are using processor, memory and disk. If a machine is slow, look here first. You can end a frozen app from here. - Device Manager. Right click the Start button to find it. Shows every piece of hardware and flags problems with a yellow warning sign. Use it to update or roll back a driver.
- Storage settings. A nearly full drive makes Windows slow and stops updates. Storage Sense can clear temporary files.
- Installs security fixes. Keep machines up to date, but plan big updates outside busy hours.
