Why a smart job search matters
Design roles attract many applicants, and junior roles can be hard to find. A focused, honest search, with a strong portfolio and good interview practice, makes a big difference. This lesson covers where to look, how to apply and what to expect in design interviews.
Where to look
- Company career pages of fintechs, banks, telecoms, agritech and health startups, and design agencies.
- Ghanaian job boards such as Jobberman, searching for UI/UX designer, product designer and UX researcher.
- Remote job boards that list roles open to people based in Africa. Read each advert carefully for location and time zone requirements.
- Fellowships and internships that some companies run for early career designers.
- Design communities and meetups, online and at tech hubs, where people share openings.
Read adverts closely. A title like UI/UX Designer can hide a graphic design job, and a junior title can ask for several years of experience. Apply when you match most of the core skills, even if not every line.
Avoid scams
Never pay to apply for a job, to receive an offer or for "training" that guarantees a job. Reputable job boards, including Jobberman, warn job seekers not to make payments to get jobs. Be careful with any "test task" that looks like real client work for free; a short exercise is normal, but days of unpaid work is not.
