When an agency, company or client in Ghana decides whether to hire you, a portfolio does the talking. One Ghanaian digital marketer advert we studied asked directly for a portfolio of past campaigns, and many others ask for experience. A portfolio is how a beginner shows experience. It does not need to be fancy. It needs to be real, honest and easy to open on a phone or a laptop.
Real beats mock
Practice projects for made up businesses are fine while you learn, but real work convinces people more. Offer a short, clearly defined trial to two or three local businesses or organisations: a shop, a church, a school club, an NGO or a family business. For example, "I will set up your WhatsApp Business and run your Status for four weeks." Agree what you will do, what access you need, and that you can show the work in your portfolio.
The case study format
For each project, tell a short story:
- The client. Who they are, in one or two sentences.
- The problem. What was not working. "Orders were getting lost in personal chats."
- What you did. The specific actions: set up a catalogue, created quick replies, planned a calendar, made five videos.
- The results. What changed, with honest numbers if you have them and the client agrees. "Messages answered within the hour instead of the next day." "Twelve orders came from Status in four weeks." If results were small, say so and explain what you learned.
