Skills only change your life when someone pays you for them. Digital marketing has several doors into paid work, and you can start knocking on some of them before you feel "ready". This section helps you choose a path, collect proof of your skills and get your first paying work in Ghana or remotely.
Three main paths
- Employed in a company. Many organisations hire marketing assistants, social media executives, content creators and communications officers: retailers, banks and fintechs, telecoms, hotels, schools, churches, NGOs and think tanks. You get a salary, colleagues to learn from and steady work.
- Agency work. Marketing and advertising agencies manage campaigns for many clients at once. Agencies move fast and teach a lot, and they often hire juniors who can show real work.
- Freelancing. You work for your own clients, often local businesses, for a monthly fee or per project. You choose your clients, but you also handle your own sales, agreements and invoices.
Many people mix these. You might freelance for two shops in Tamale while applying for agency jobs, or keep one freelance client after you get hired.
What employers and clients look for
Across Ghanaian and remote adverts for junior marketing roles, the same things keep appearing:
- Evidence you can create good content and manage social pages.
- Comfort with common free tools for design, video, spreadsheets and analytics.
