Many small businesses in Ghana need marketing help but cannot afford a full time employee. That is a real opportunity for freelancers. A shea butter seller, a pharmacy shop, a guest house and a church can each pay for a few hours of your time a week. Freelancing well means treating it as a small business: clear services, clear agreements and getting paid on time.
Package your services
Owners find it hard to buy "digital marketing". They find it easier to buy something specific. Create two or three packages, for example:
- Setup. A one time job: WhatsApp Business profile, catalogue and quick replies, plus a Google Business Profile.
- Monthly content. A set number of posts and Status updates per month, with replies to comments during agreed hours.
- Campaign. A focused push for an event or season, with a plan, content, a small ad budget and a report.
Price each package based on the time it takes and what is fair locally, and quote in cedis. Start modestly while you build a portfolio, but do not work for free for long.
Write a simple agreement
Even with friends and family, write it down. A one page agreement, shared on WhatsApp or email and confirmed by both sides, should cover:
- What you will do, and what is not included.
- The fee, when it is due and how it is paid, such as MoMo or bank transfer.
- A deposit before you start, especially for new clients.
