Skills alone do not get you hired. You also need proof of what you can do, and a way of showing it to the right people. This section is about turning your learning into income, whether through a job at a Ghanaian company, a remote role, or freelancing for local businesses.
Three routes to income
- A job in Ghana. Tech companies, fintechs, agencies, ecommerce businesses and some public institutions hire web developers. Entry routes include internships and National Service placements, which several adverts we studied were for.
- A remote job. Some companies hire developers anywhere in the world. Competition is strong, so your portfolio and communication must be excellent.
- Freelancing. Local shops, schools, churches and NGOs need simple websites. This can bring income while you look for a job, and it gives you real projects.
Many people combine these: freelancing while applying for jobs.
What employers look for
Across the adverts we studied, a few things came up again and again beyond technical skills:
- Proof: projects with live links and readable code.
- Communication: clear written and spoken English, and explaining technical ideas to non technical people.
